What is base64?
Base64 is a scheme that represents binary data in an ASCII string format. It´s used to transfer and store data over media that uses textual data.
Web developers often convert images to base64 format to avoid additional HTTP requests to the server. The images are included as a base64 strings in the CSS file or in the HTML source.
Fewer HTTP requests makes your application load faster and this is particularly important for mobile devices. Base64 encoding adds around 10% to the image size after gzip compression so you need to weigh this against the benifits with fewer HTTP requests.
